Leading – Phil B
This ride is 22 miles with a mix of on and off-road cycling and 940 feet of ascent. The off-road sections include canal towpath, cycleways and decent trails but a road bike is not recommended.
We will join the canal towpath at Poolstock and cycle a short distance to join the Westwood Way cycleway. We leave the cycleway and pass up Little Lane then continue into Highfield and through Redwood estate to Orrell. We cycle across the Rivers Street estate and Upholland to Hall Green. We will have a short break then cycle over Alma Hill to Pimbo. We then have a downhill run through Crawford Village and continue to Rainford Junction. We join the Rainford Linear Park and follow the trails for a couple of miles then rejoin the road. We cut along Berrington Lane to join Crank Road and begin our climb up through Crank to Billinge. When we reach Windy Arbour it’s downhill into Wigan.
Everyone is welcome to join us at the Red Pepper café for a drink and a chat after the ride.
Non-members are very welcome to come along for a ride or two before joining, all we ask is that you fill out one of our membership forms before doing so and bring it along with you as well as your own bike & helmet to use on the ride.

16th Dec – Jim T: 19 mile and 700ft. River Douglas towpath into Bottling Wood, Whelley Loop, Hall Lane. Wingates, School Lane, Haigh Hall, Aspull, Borsdane Wood, Amberswood, Platt Bridge, Lily Lane, Three Sisters, Landgate Lane, Backbone and towpath back to Trencherfield.

2nd Dec – Phil B: 23 mile and 1000ft. Canal towpath to Gathhurst, Shevington, Rigbye Arms, Hunters, Bispham Green, Mawdesley, Anderton Mill, Cardiac Hill, Wrightington, Standish Cycleway, Gidlow & back to Trencherfield.
We leave Wigan on the Wallgate cycleway and enter the canal towpath at the Brick Stadium. We follow the towpath to Gathurst where we join the road into Shevington and then down to Appley Bridge. We then climb from Skull House Lane up to High Moor where we’ll take a break outside the Rigbye Arms. Next, we cycle down Hunters Hill and onto country lanes taking us through Bispham Green and into the farthest point of our ride at Mawdesley.
On our return we cycle through Andertons Mill and up Barmskin Lane where we take our customary break at the motorcycle shop car park. We then cycle through Tunley Lane into Wrightington and follow Pepper Lane into Standish to join the Standish Mineral Line cycleway. This takes us across to Green Lane and the cycleway back to Wigan. We leave the cycleway at Gidlow Lane and descend into Wigan following Prescott Street and Miry Lane back to our start point.

Whelley Loop, Kirkless Whelley Loop again, Hall Lane, Haigh Hall, Balcarres, Little Scotland, Arley Lane, Red Rock, Lurdin Lane, Standish, Elnup Woods, Shevington, Pads to Crooke village, through the woods to Martland Mill, Brick Stadium and Wallgate cycleway back to Trencherfield.
4th Nov – Phil B: 23 mile and 900ft. Westwood Way, Winstanley, Windy Arbour, Billinge, Crank, Rainford Bypass, Rainford Junction, Crawford, Pimbo, Upholland, Orrell Post, Kitt Green, Martland Mill and Wallgate cycleway back to Trencherfield.

14th Oct – Tony G: 22 mile. Canal to Standish Lower Ground, Crooke Village, pads to Shevington, Miles Lane, Appley Bridge, past Golden Days Garden Centre and cross the main road to Mossy Lea Road, Church Lane, Anderton Mill, Parbold, Lees Lane, Appley Bridge, canal back to Crooke, through the woods and the Industrial Estate to Stadium Way and back to the start via Wallgate.
7th Oct – Jim T: 19 miles and 400ft. Lower Ince, Amberswood, Blackberry Drive, Hindley Green, Howe Bridge, Lilford Park, Guided Busway, canal towpath to Slag Lane, Crankwood, Dover Lock and canal towpath back to Trencherfield.
30th Sep Jim T: 23 miles and 120ft. Boars Head, Chorley Road, canal towpath into Adlington, Chorley Golf Course, Horwich, Crown Lane and Station Road to Little Scotland, Haigh, mineral line to the canal towpath back to Trencherfield.

5th Aug – Jim T: 22 mile and 900ft. Amberswood, Hindley Green, towards Westhoughton, Chew Moor, Lostock, Regents Park Golf Course, Middlebrook, Chorley New Road, Horwich ‘Tanners Brow’, Little Scotland, Haigh Woodland Park, Mesnes Road, Frog Lane, Miry Lane and back to Trencherfield.
29th July – Tony G: 20 mile and 850 ft. Whelley Loop, Belle Green Lane, Hemfield Road, Hindley Station. Borsdane Wood, Aspull, Balcarres, Red Rock, Standish, Pepper Lane, Old Pepper Lane, Beech Walk, new cycleway down to Beech Hill, Gidlow Lane, Prescott St and back to Trencherfield.

8th July – Jim T: 23 Mile and 700ft. Largely off road taking in Three Sisters, Amberswood, Borsdane Woods, Haigh, Boars Head, Gidlow Cycleway & back to Trencherfield.
1st Jul – John M: Cherry Gardens via Mesnes Park, Whitley Crescent, Gidlow Lane, new cycle path (Standish Wood Lane) to Standish, Mineral Line, Pepper Lane, Mossy Lea Road, Church, Smithy Brow, Parbold via Bispham and Hilldale, The Common, Higher Lane, Lees Lane, Appley Lane South, Mill Lane, Miles Lane and back to Trencherfield, via Crooke Pads and either Canal Tow Path or Stadium Way.
