30th July – Extended Ride

Phil B will be leading:

Southport Ride

9.30am from Trencherfield Mill, Heritage Way, Woods Street, Wigan WN3 4A

Note:  This ride is weather permitting.  If the ride is postponed a message will be issued on the WhatsApp group on Monday evening.

This month’s longer ride will take us out to Southport and back following cycleways, roads and canal towpath.  It’s a little over 51 miles with around 1300 feet of ascent.  A little under half of the climbing occurs in the first 8 miles.

We will leave Wigan on the Westwood Way cycleway and make our way up to Orrell then on through Upholland and Hall Green to Ashurst Beacon.  There are no more significant climbs after the Beacon.  We descend and follow country roads out to Westhead before passing through Scarth Hill to Town Green.  After 25 miles we stop for lunch at Bill Rimmer’s Cafe and Tea Room on the outskirts of Southport.

After lunch we ride into Southport where we join the promenade cycleway for a short distance before commencing our return.  We’re soon back on country roads passing through Smithy Lane Ends, New Lane and Tarlscough on our way to Burscough Bridge.  We continue through Hoscar to Newburgh before joining the canal towpath at Parbold.  We then have a flat ride along the towpath back into Wigan where we return down the Wallgate cycleway to our start point.  This route is suitable for any bike.

Starting at 9:30am from Trencherfield Mill, Heritage Way, Woods Street, Wigan WN3 4AT

Non-members are very welcome to come along for a ride or two before joining, all we ask is that you fill out one of our membership forms before doing so and bring it along with you as well as your own bike & helmet to use on the ride.
