We will leave Wigan on the Westwood Way cycleway and make our way up to Orrell then on through Upholland and Hall Green to Ashurst Beacon.  There are no more significant climbs after the Beacon.  We descend and follow country roads out to Westhead before passing through Scarth Hill to Town Green.  After 25 miles we stop for lunch at Bill Rimmer’s Cafe and Tea Room on the outskirts of Southport.

After lunch we ride into Southport where we join the promenade cycleway for a short distance before commencing our return.  We’re soon back on country roads passing through Smithy Lane Ends, New Lane and Tarlscough on our way to Burscough Bridge.  We continue through Hoscar to Newburgh before joining the canal towpath at Parbold.  We then have a flat ride along the towpath back into Wigan where we return down the Wallgate cycleway to our start point.  This route is suitable for any bike.

    Hi
I have got a electric bike and is that ok.
    Regards Terry.

    • Paul says:

Hi Terry electric bike should be fine, but just bear in mind that a lot of the off-road trails we use have access barriers (kissing gate type affair)on them. Might be a little more awkward to negotiate with a heavier bike. Only one way to find out though!

    • Geoffrey Smith says:

I regularly use an electric bike on rides without problem
