Leading: Phil B

This week’s Thursday route is around 23 miles with approximately 1000 feet of ascent. It’s a mix of cycleway, road and off road cycling with a few climbs on the route and some great viewpoints. Your ride leader will not be on an electric bike so we will be having a few stops on the route. The ride will be suitable for any bike, except a road bike. 

We will leave Wigan on the Westwood Way cycleway and continue on cycleway to Clapgate Lane. We then follow our regular route climbing through Winstanley on shared footpaths until we reach Beech Walk. We then join the road and leave the estate to get up to Windy Arbour and our first recovery point. After a short break we will continue on road and cycle into Billinge where we will enter Beacon Road. This leads us to paths and tracks that will take us to the beacon atop Billinge Hill. If we get a clear morning we will have a view of Liverpool and, maybe, Blackpool Tower in the distance. When we leave the trails around Billinge Hill we join Crank Road. We then proceed down Shaley Brow to Kings Moss and into Crank. Country lanes lead us into Rainford and Crawford then on through Pimbo to Upholland.  We then descend into Roby Mill where we join the track down Lafford Lane to return to Upholland.  We cycle into Orrell and onwards to Kitt Green before we enter the Martland Mill Industrial Estate. The final section of our will be flexible but we will eventually join the canal towpath to get to the Brick Stadium. We then cycle past the B & Q store to join the Wallgate cycleway taking us back to Trencherfield. 

Everyone is welcome to join us at the Red Pepper café for a drink and chat after the ride.

Non members are very welcome to come along for a ride or two before joining, all we ask is that you fill out one of our membership forms before doing so and bring it along with you as well as your own bike & helmet to use on the ride. No need to let us know if you’re coming along, just turn up on the day!

24th Apr – Phil B: 21 mile and 500ft. Canal towpath to New Springs, Withington Lane, Hall Lane, Bolton Road, Mill Lane, Borsdane Wood, Jacks Lane, Wearish Lane, Daisy Hill, Hindley Green, Westleigh, Fir Tree Flash, Bickershaw Colliery site, Hindley, Park Road, Amberswood, Westwood Council estate, Westwood Way cycleway and canal towpath back to Trencherfield.

17th Apr – Phil B: 26 mile and 1000 ft. Wallgate cycleway to the Saddle Junction, Stadium Way, Martland Mill, Kitt Green, Gathurst, Shevington, Miles Lane, Appley Bridge, Lees Lane, Newburgh, Bispham Green, Mawdesley, Cardiac Hill, Tunley Lane, Pepper Lane, Mineral Line, New Cycleway to Gidlow Lane and back to Trencherfield.

10th Apr – Phil B: 18 mile and 900ft. Westwood Way, Little Lane, Leopold Street, Hall Lane, Orrell Water Park, Tracks Lane, Tontine, Lafford Lane, Whitley Road, Bank Brow, Appley Bridge, Elnup Wood, Standish Lower Ground, Beech Hill, Springfield, Miry Lane and back to Trencherfield.

3rd Apr – Phil B: 22 mile and 600 ft. Parsons Meadow, Worsley Mesnes, Westwood Way, Hawkley Woods, Devil’s Backbone, North Ashton, Garswood, The Turpin, Arch Lane, Ashton, Bryn, Three Sisters, Viridor, alongside the railway to Bamfurlong, Platt Bridge, Amberswood inc the boardwalks, Lower Ince and back to Trencherfield. 

27th Mar – Len W: 21 mile 1400ft. Crooke, Shevington, Appley Bridge, Dangerous Corner, Stoney Lane, Parbold, Newburgh, Cobbs Lane, Ashurst Beacon, Orrell, Hall Lane, Leopold St, Little Lane, Parsons Meadow & back to base.

20th Mar – No ride (first aid course)

13th Mar – Phil B: 21 mile 400ft. Canal towpath to, Whelley Loop, crossing Higher Ince off road into Hindley and Hindley Green, Bickershaw, Fir Tree Flash, Plank Lane, Pennington Flash, canal towpath to Platt Bridge, Amberswood, Westwood Way and canal towpath back to Trencherfield. 

6th Mar – Tony G: 18 mile. Canal towpath to Whelley Loop through to Hall Lane, Plantations to Mowpin Lodge, bridleway to Aspull Rugby Club, Hall Lane, Borsdane Wood, Hindley Green, Bickershaw, Road To Nowhere, Fir Tree flash, Plank Lane & Canal towpath back to Wigan.

27th Feb – Jim T: 22 miles 900ft. Amberswood, Hindley Green, Westhoughton, Chew Moor, Lostock, Blackrod, Haigh Hall, Mesnes Road, Miry Lane and back to Trencherfield

20th Feb – Phil B: 20 mile, 800ft. Parsons Meadow, Worsley Mesnes estate, Westwood Cycleway, canal towpath to Moss Bridge, Cemetery Road, Amberswood, Kirklees, Route 55 to Hall Lane, Haigh Hall, Balcarres, Little Scotland, Blundell Lane into Arley, golf course, Red Rock, Lurdin Lane, mineral line down into Beech Hill, Gidlow Lane& Miry Lane back to our start point.

13th Feb – Phil B: 20 mile. Amberswood, Low Hall, Bickershaw, Fir Tree Flash, Plank Lane, Byrom Wood, Golborne, Ashton Heath, Skitters Wood, North, Brocstedes, Landgate Lane, Hawkley Woods and canal towpath back to Wigan.

6th Feb – Phil B: 23 mile and 1000ft. Westwood Way to Goose Green, shared footpaths through Winstanley to Windy Arbour, Billinge, Crank village, Rainford Bypass, Rainford Linear Park, Crawford, Pimbo, Tower Hill, Tontine, Edge Hall Road, Banana Bridge, Highfield, Saddle Junction and back to Trencherfield.

30th Jan- Phil B: A 21 miles 500 feet, Westwood Way, Amberswood, Hindley Green, Westleigh Lane, Howe Bridge Crematorium, Atherleigh Way, Lilford Park, Leigh Guided Busway, Siddow Common, Pennington, Pennington Flash, Plank Lane bridge, back to Wigan.

16th Jan Phil B: 20 miles, 550 feet. Parsons Meadow, Worsley Mesnes, Alexandra Park, Enfield Street, Leopold Street, Banana Bridge, Billinge, Newton Road, Garswood, Ashton, Three Sisters Nature Park, Viridor, Bryn Gates, Bamfurlong, back to Wigan. 

12th Dec – Phil B: 22 miles, 850 feet. 5th Dec – Phil B: 24 miles, 950 feet. Westwood Way cycleway, Goose Green, Winstanley, Windy Arbour, Billinge, Crank, Rainford Bypass, Digmoor, Hall Green, Upholland, Orrell, Saddle Junction, Wallgate cycleway into Wigan.
